SC Paderborn 07 has earned promotion to the Bundesliga after a grueling 120-minute battle against VfL Wolfsburg in the relegation playoff, winning 2-1. Laurin Curda scored the decisive goal in extra time. VfL Wolfsburg is relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time in 29 years. Sven Michel was overjoyed after the game and said: 'It's all just sinking in.' His coach Ralf Kettemann was also searching for words: 'I'm looking forward to the moment when I can access my feelings again, because that will be grandiose.' Wolfsburg's coach Dieter Hecking was composed and congratulated the Paderborn team. The anticipation for the most important game in many years was high in Paderborn, especially since the first leg had ended 0-0. But it was quickly dampened after just three minutes. With a long ball, Joakim Mæhle outplayed the entire Paderborn defense and found striker Adam Daghim. The 20-year-old Dane played the ball into the space, where his striking partner Dzenan Pejcinovic calmly scored the 1-0 goal. The second-tier team needed a few minutes to recover from the early setback. After ten minutes, it got heated for the first time. Paderborn's Filip Bilbija clashed with Maehle - both received a yellow card. Just three minutes later, Maehle was in the spotlight again. The Dane came in with a stretched leg much too late and was given a yellow-red card after just 14 minutes. The dynamics of the game changed immediately. The guests, who had been in control until then, were pushed back into their own half with one man less. But Paderborn couldn't capitalize on this in the first 30 minutes. Then Santiago Castaneda tested Wolfsburg's keeper Kamil Grabara with a strong shot from 14 meters. The Polish national player made a great save. Paderborn didn't give up and pushed for the equalizer. A throw-in deep in Wolfsburg's half landed on the head of Calvin Brackelmann, who precisely headed the ball to Bilbija. The most noticeable Paderborn player headed in the deserved 1-1 equalizer. Wolfsburg couldn't cope with this pressure and took the 1-1 score into halftime. Even after the break, only Paderborn played. After the ninth corner and a header from Stefano Marino, Jeanuel Belocian saved on the line for VfL. The follow-up shot from Sebastian Klaas was blocked just before the line. A little later, Marino missed the lead with a header after a precise cross from Brackelmann. The next shot from Klaas landed from 16 meters. Laurin Curda scored the decisive 2-1 goal for Paderborn in extra time.
